Growth – What Can You Learn from a Crab?

As crabs grow, they undergo a complex and elaborate process known as molting. This process involves shedding their old shell or exoskeleton in order to make way for a new and larger shell. Since their shell cannot expand to allow for growth, crabs are forced to shed the old to bring in the new to accommodate their growing bodies. However, this molting process is not without challenges. Molting is a critical process for growth, yet also leaves the crab in a vulnerable state that can last for several days depending on the type of crab and its environment.

There are many parallels that can be drawn between the growth of a crab and the conscious growth of us as humans.

The process, similar to human shift or change, begins with preparation. For the crab, this requires physiological changes and significant absorption of calcium from the old exoskeleton to lay the groundwork of the new shell. They will also absorb additional water which they use to expand their body to help break and separate the old shell from the underlying new exoskeleton.

The challenge for humans isn’t usually physical. It is far more of a mental exercise. Often, growth requires managing change, new challenges, and unknowns which can foster different emotional hurdles such as fear, uncertainty, doubt, and apprehension. These can be just as daunting as shedding a shell, or more.
